Chapter One

A letter from David Kessler, founder.

I started The Card Chest in 2009 out of a one-room office on Industrial Way, with two card magazines, a laptop, and a stack of consignment submissions I had walked out of a PSA submission window with that morning. I was twenty-six. I had spent the previous four years as a PSA consigner, watching the same collectors get burned twice — once on a misrepresented raw card, and once on a graded card that turned out to be a crack-out. I thought, badly, that I could fix that.

I was wrong about the timeline. Fifteen years later, the problem is bigger, not smaller. The market has more fakes, more crack-outs, more trimmed corners, more AI-enhanced scan manipulation, and more "buy before I send it to PSA" pitches than at any point in the hobby's history. A serious collector can lose real money in a single bid on a card that photographs three grades better than it actually is.

What I learned in those first years is that the only thing that actually defends a collector is procedure. Not a brand. Not a logo. Not a sprint to list. Procedure. The card comes in. It gets inspected by one authenticator. It gets cross-checked by a second. The grade is confirmed against current population reports, the centering is measured, the corners are looked at under a loupe, and the back is examined for paper loss. Then, and only then, does it get a price and a listing. That procedure — the same one we ran in 2009 with three people, now run by nine in-house PSA-registered authenticators — is what produces the 0.03% return rate. It is not a marketing line. It is the audit result of 180,000+ cards shipped, and it is the only number I keep on the wall in my office.

What you can expect when you buy from us is this: a card that has been looked at by at least two people on our team, packed in a screw-down case, shipped inside a hard mailer with a written authenticity guarantee, and backed by a 30-day price-lock. If a card over $1,000 is off by even a half-grade, we eat it. If a card over $2,500 doesn't cross at the grade we sold it as, we submit it to PSA on our dime — a $50+ service we absorb. We do this because the alternative is being a dealer I wouldn't buy from myself, and I have never been interested in that business.

If you have read this far, thank you. The rest of this page is the operating record — the timeline, the team, the awards, the press. I am proud of it. — David Kessler, founder.

The Nine

Nine authenticators, every card over $1,000 reviewed twice.

The team is the operation. The 0.03% return rate is not a brand promise — it is the audit output of two people looking at every card over $1,000 before it lists, with a written authentication guarantee attached to the order.

  • 9 in-house PSA-registered authenticators, including two former BGS graders.
  • 2-review standard on every card over $1,000 — no single-grader listings, no exceptions.
  • 4 full-time photographers producing the imaging collectors see on every listing.
  • Free 60-day PSA cross-grade submission on any card over $2,500 — a $50+ value we absorb.

The team is led by David Kessler and has been staffed by the same core group since 2017.
